What felt like a surreal month and change, it is now narrowing down to a real epic 2025 beginning for the tech industry. Hello everyone, hope you are enjoying the pre-holiday season. A lot has gone on, many weapons have been shot, a plethora of threats have been said, new allies popping up and perhaps new enemies popping from within, all of this in preparation for the 2025 wars. We have the usual armed conflicts, which I have commented on many times. Those will continue to escalate at a decent pace. What will happen there? Hard to say, but one thing is for sure, death will be the common denominator. On the Technology conflicts, 2025 will start with yet another set of tariffs for Chinese made technology. For those of us that have been in the tech industry long enough, we are confident that we can weather the changes. Unfortunately, regardless of all the efforts we put in to cutting costs or circumventing tariffs, the 25%-35% import tax on many semiconductors will end up being paid by the consumers. Not good for my suppliers, not good for my customers, hence who is really winning here? Mkts use to follow these legislations closely to make sure they stock up before price increases or shortages arise, just what happened in the pre-covid, covid and post-covid era. As a result, the world realized that the tech manufacturing mkt speculation was extremely volatile unlike commodities like energy or gas etc. What end up happening from that fake bonanza was overwhelming stockpiles that halted the dynamic business of the independent distribution. So, what is happening now? Nothing! Companies are not willing to speculate anymore, they are still hurting from bad decisions made 2-3 yrs ago and most of us have opted to wait, see what happens and then act. I have a list of all the new ECCNs affected starting Jan 1st, 2025. If you are interested send me a personal msg and I can share. What do you think, will 2025 tariffs help the US local tech industry, ramped-up through reshoring, bringing growth, labor and prosperity to a somewhat stagnant tech distribution industry or are we going to see the same of what we saw in 2024, full of uncertainty, fear, and ultimately low cash? 📢 SK hynix Unveils Plans for Industry-First 48GB, 16-Layer HBM3E AI Chips In a landmark announcement at the SK AI Summit in Seoul, SK hynix CEO Noh-Jung Kwak confirmed plans to begin producing the world’s first 48GB, 16-layer high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips early next year. Positioned to meet the rising demands of AI, these HBM3E chips target significant performance gains, with 18% better training speeds and 32% higher inference efficiency over current 12-layer models. 🚀 SK hynix will supply samples of the new HBM3E to customers in early 2024 and anticipates mass shipments by mid-year. Winbond secures NOR flash orders from Apple for 3Q24, say sources #Winbond Electronics has grabbed 45nm NOR flash orders from Apple, with shipments kicking off in the third quarter, according to industry sources. The orders may help the #Taiwan-based company capture a larger market share from its Chinese counterpart, GigaDevice Semiconductor Inc.. The recent surge in China's domestic NOR flash manufacturing capacity has resulted in a decline in #memory prices during the latter part of this year, suffering a modest decrease of around 5% compared to the first half, sources said. The prices of NOR flash should have stabilized from their low point in the first half of 2024, sources indicated. However, the market prices have been impacted due to the conversion of a portion of Chinese foundries' fab capabilities to NOR flash, since the demand for logic ICs with mature processes has declined. Consequently, this adjustment has led to a rise in the total inventory of NOR flash. On the demand side, a slower-than-usual peak season in the third quarter, combined with a recession in China's domestic consumer markets, has contributed to the market's oversupply, according to sources. Despite the current total NOR production capacity being slightly greater than demand, prices are unlikely to fall dramatically.
